Abstract
609,921. Heat-treating glass. BLUE RIDGE GLASS CORPORATION. March 25, 1946, No. 9166. Convention date, March 27, 1945. [Class 56] To reduce the risk of breakage of glass on heating during a heat-treatment process or preparatory to a metallising process, the margins of the glass are heated more rapidly than the central portions, whereby compressive strain instead of tension is set up in the margins. For this purpose there is provided in the furnace D a metal frame A of which the outside dimension is greater than that of the glass to be heated and the inside dimension is less than that of the glass. The glass B is placed on the frame after the latter has attained furnace temperature and, if the glass is to be metallised it is removed with the frame and is subjected to the metallising process and cooling while still remaining thereon.
