Abstract

Aqueous wax emulsions comprise a wax, for example paraffin wax, ceresin, beeswax, or spermacetti, or mixtures thereof melting at a temperature not exceeding 90 DEG C., a modified bovine blood albumen, and a salt of an amphoteric metal, for example, aluminium formate, acetate or sulphate, or zirconium oxychloride or formate. The bovine blood albumen is modified by treatment with aqueous alkali at from 20 DEG to 60 DEG C. for at least 2 hours, and then addition of sufficient acid, e.g. formic or acetic, to bring the pH value to below 4.4. Other substances to improve stability or water-repellency may be incorporated, such as crystal rosin, stearic acid, and the condensation product of b -naphthol with 5 mols. of ethylene oxide. The emulsions may be prepared by emulsifying directly a molten wax in an aqueous solution of the modified blood albumen at a pH value below 4.4 using a homogenising machine. An aqueous solution of the salt of the amphoteric metal may be added before or after emulsification. Other substances may be added to the emulsion or may be incorporated in the molten wax. Textiles may be rendered water-repellent by impregnation with the emulsions and subsequently drying.
