[Class 44] A lock, for example for use on motor-car doors, comprises a latch 9 pivotally mounted in a horizontal plane and having two lugs 12, 13 projecting from the end face of the door. Lug 13 co-operates with lug 23 on a striker plate secured on a fixed pillar of the door opening to cause rotation of the latch on closing of the door, thereby bringing lug 12 into locking position in relation to lug 23 and permitting a spring-pressed plunger 16 slotted to straddle pivot pin 10 of the latch, to move between face 18 of a shoulder on the latch and casing 17 to maintain the latch in its locked position. To release latch 9, plunger 16 is provided with a stud 28 linked by angle plate 27 and stud 26 sliding in bush 25, to knob 26a on the inside of the door. Knob 26a is accommodated in handle 30 for ease of manipulation by pressure on knob 26a to retract the plunger 16. On opening the door, co-operation between lug 23 and lug 12 imparts clockwise movement to the latch and on releasing knob 26a the end face 19 of the plunger 16 contacts the side face 19a of the shoulder of lug 12, as shown to retain the latch in its unlocked position. To open the door from the outside, lever 33 (Fig. 5) is provided pivoted at 34 and bearing against stud 28, the upper end being connected by link 36 to handle 35. A safety catch 42 pivoted to a bracket on casing 17 is adapted to engage a stud 43 on lever 33 and is provided with a cam face 46 arranged to engage with lug 41 formed on angle plate 27 when this latter is moved' from its neutral position and prevents lever 33 from being moved to retract plunger 16. Another cam surface 47 engages lug 41 when angle plate 27 is moved to neutral position and rotates the safety catch out of contact with stud 43 leaving lever 33 free for operation by handle 35. Spring-loaded balls 48 carried in the sliding stud 26 engage holes in bush 25 and determine the neutral and safety positions of knob 26a. In an alternative safety catch arrangement, lever 33 is pivoted above stud 28 and is operated by a push-button, the safetycatch and stud 43 being located at the lower end of the lever.
