Abstract

609,355. Oil-filled cables. TRIGGS, W. W. (American Steel & Wire Co. of New Jersey). March 12, 1946, No. 7654. [Class 36] An electric cable having liquid insulation 16 and one or more conductors 2 enclosed in an impervious sheath 10 has a plurality of concentric tubes 12 and 14, the outer tubes 12 being perforated at 22 to admit liquid. Initially both tubes 12, 14 contain gas. If the insulating liquid expands the pressure forces it through the openings 22 into the outer tubes 12, where it is retained by capillary action, the gas being trapped in segments 24. If the liquid pressure drops, the pressure of the compressed gas drives the liquid back into the cable. An oil and gas reservoir 26 is provided to stabilize the pressure of the system. Oil 28 is fed to the cable by means of tube 30. The top portion 32 contains gas under pressure and is in communication with both tubes 12 and 14. The conductors and tubes are twisted together into a helix. U.S.A. Specifications 2,138,362 and 2,316,808 are referred to.
