Abstract

606,734. Treating steel. GOSKAR, T. A., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 17, 1946, No. 1643. [Class 72] A quenching bath for the treatment of steel has, in addition to the main tank containing a molten salt, a small settling tank either inside or adjacent to the main tank and in communication therewith by means of an overflow pipe near the top of the settling tank and above the liquid level in the main tank and pumping means for continuously filling the settling tank from the main tank. As shown, a salt bath 10 has fitted within it a smaller settling tank 6 filled from the main tank by a suction line 9, a centrifugal pump 1 and a discharge pipe 5. The tank 6 is provided with baffles 7 which prevent unnecessary agitation and assist in the separation of fine solid matter which may be removed from the bottom of the tank by dredging or. particularly in the case where the small tank is separate from the main tank, Fig. 3 (not shown), by a sludge cock.
