Abstract

605,214. Feeding sheets. TEBBS, G. W., and H. T. B., Ltd. Dec. 4, 1945, No. 32747. [Class 100(i)] To replenish a pile of sheets carried by chains 1, which are raised automatically to feed position, without stoppage of the feed, an auxiliary pile-raising means is provided which is brought into action to enable the pile board 2 to be lowered to receive a fresh supply of sheets. The pile P is supported while the board 2 is lowered by means of a pile transfer table 7 which is carried by four brackets 9 pivoted to two sets of chains 5 moving in closed orbits adjacent to the pile edges, and by two similar sets of chains 6 arranged as shown in Fig. 1. The chains 5, 6 are controlled by hand or automatically to move the transfer board 7 quickly in a horizontal direction between the pile board 2 and a pile-protection board 10 with a bent edge 11 to guide the board 7 into position without injury to the sheets, or a pair of protection boards may be used and the board 7 guided to move between them. To ensure that the board 7 moves in a strictly rectangular path the brackets 9 are pivotally attached to the transfer board at points spaced inwardly from the pitch lines of the chains 5, 6 by a distance equal to the radius of curvature of the path of the pitch line of the chain where it passes round the wheels or guides 8. The chains 5, 6 raise the pile at the same rate as the chains 1 normally do while these are being lowered to receive a new pile. The board 7 is finally withdrawn rapidly prior to the transfer of the feed to the chains.
