Abstract
605,096. Electrically-actuated valves. HOMER, H. W. Dec. 14, 1945, No. 33860. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXXVIII] In an electromagneticallyoperated valve, the pallet is opened in the direction of air flow to improve the smoothness of air flow and prevent too rapid closing. The valve is mounted in a closed chamber. In one form, an electromagnet 25, Fig. 1, attracts its pivoted armature 21 which raises the pallet 18 through a toggle link 20, so allowing air to pass from passage 12 to outlet 15. This form of toggle link enables the return spring 24 to exert an increasing pressure on the valve as it closes, thereby overcoming the wind pressure. In a balanced valve arrangement the pallet 30, Fig. 2, is mounted on a sliding stem 33 and is moved off its seating when magnet 39 attracts its armature 37. The valve is balanced by a bellows 47, whose interior communicates with the chamber 32 through orifices 49, 50, and the valve is normally held. closed by a return spring 41. In order to make the valve close more slowly than it opens leather non-return valves 51 are placed over the passages 50 to cause the air trapped in the bellows 47 to pass out through a single passage 49 whose effective area can be varied as by a screw 52.
