Abstract
604,746. Electrodeposition of selenium. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Feb. 7, 1944, No. 2273. Convention date, Jan. 5, 1943. [Class 41] [Also in Group V] A low-resistivity electrode suitable for the electro-deposition of selenium, comprises a mixture of selenium and one or more materials from the group carbon, gold, platinum, and palladium. The electrode may be used as an anode with a plating solution comprising SeO2 dissolved in dilute H2SO, H2SeO4, HNO3, or HCl, as described in Specification 592,165, or as a cathode in the anodic deposition from H2Se derived from dilute H2SO4 as described in Specification 579,851. A mixture of 10- 75 per cent by weight of carbon powder and the balance selenium powder is heated in a mould to a temperature causing sintering or preferably above the melting-point of selenium, and then allowed to cool. The selenium is then preferably reduced to metallic form by annealing below the melting-point. Alternatively, the mixture may be compressed with or without heating, in which case the carbon can be as low as 2.5 per cent. Other mixtures referred to are 20 per cent and 28.5 per cent of carbon. The finished electrode 16, Fig. 2, is fitted with a conducting 'core 17 of gold, platinum, or graphite, or'the core may enter the electrode so little as not to be immersed in the electrolyte, Fig. 4 (not shown). In Fig. 5, a porous, ceramic cup 20 is placed round a cast or compressed mixture 21 for use as an anode. Other porous containers comprise a bag of fibre glass, and a glass tube having a porous end-piece made of sintered glass, the porous container in each case serving to retain deposited carbon, (Figs. 6, 7, not shown).
