Abstract

604,006. Friction clutches. GERST, C. Nov. 20, 1945, No. 31228. [Class 80 (ii)] In a friction clutch the operating levers are arranged to lie within the rotating shifting means and to swing towards the axis of the clutch for engagement. A driving member 2 has internal splines engaging driving friction discs 11 which may be brought into engagement with the driven discs 10 which are splined at their centre to a hub 5 connected to a driven shaft 3. The pressure plate 16 is splined to the hub 5 and is backed by an adjustable ring member 19 screwed on a ring 20, which is free on the hub 5. An enlarged central portion 6 of the hub has a plurality of equi-spaced radial slots housing the rollers 25, and has keyed thereto a slidable collar 28 in which are pivoted the swinging clutch levers 27. The periphery of the collar 28 is ribbed to receive the shifting collar 34 provided with trunnions 35 for engagement with a shifting fork. Axial movement of the collar 35 causes the rollers 25 to trip the swinging levers 27, which rock towards the clutch axis and exert pressure on the plate 16 by the toggle action of the rollers 31 against the rings 20. In modifications the rollers 25 are replaced by wedge-shaped blocks and are made adjustable by screwing along the hub.
