603,582. Billet-piercing. COMPTOIR INDUSTRIEL D'ETIRAGE ET PROFILAGE DE METAUX. April 11, 1945, No. 9077. Convention date, Jan. 24, 1944. [Class 83 (iv)] A method of hot punching metals consists in inserting between the piece to be punched and the punch an incombustible substance which, at the punching temperature, is in a state of viscous melting. A billet 3 is placed in a die 4 and covered by a glass plate 5. On the descent of the punch 6, the glass forms a lubricating sheath 8 surrounding the end and sides of the punch. Instead of glass, an oxide such as boron trioxide or phosphorus pentoxide may be used or a salt such as sodium metaphosphate, possessing the above properties. A slag comprising 10 per cent B 2 O 3 , 54 per cent SiO 2 , 27 per cent Na 2 O, 5.4 per cent CaO and 3.4 per cent Al 2 O 3 may also be used. The lubricating material may be applied in the form of a plate 3 or 4 mm. thick or as a powder or in small pieces. Alternatively, the work and the punch may be brushed with a solution of the lubricant, the solvent evaporating on contact. Specification 128,876, [Class 83 (iv)], is referred to.
