Abstract

603,274. Twisting machines. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION: Dec. 5, 1945, No. 32865. Convention date, March 1. [Class 120(ii)] Strands are plied together by guiding a first strand from a package through a longitudinal path relative to the axis of the package, guiding a further strand or strands from the same or further packages through a loop about part of said path and then along the remainder thereof, the strands being directed along the common portion of their path substantially at the same speed to an intertwisting position, by controlling the rate of feed of the strands just prior to the intertwisting position, regardless of their tension, and then rotating the strands in advance of the intertwisting position about a common axis. As shown . in Fig. 1, an inclined spindle 2, mounted for rotation in a block 3, and driven through pulley 4 and, belt 5 from the motor 6, supports, through anti-friction bearings, a package carrier comprising a tapered member 7, adapted to fit within the core 8 of the package, and a base 9 weighted at 10 to prevent rotation. A shroud 11 and hood 12 may be provided for preventing interference between the yarns. The yarn from this package is led through a tubular guide 13, past an adjustable spring tension element 15, and down the centre of the spindle 2. A second yarn from an external package on a support 24 is led over pulley 23, tensioning device 22, and through balloon guide 20; it is then ballooned about the first package and is fed, through a flyer 18 secured to the spindle 2, through a hole 19 in the latter, when it joins the first yarn. Both yarns then pass round the canted rolls 26, (Fig. 3), or rolls 26a on parallel axes, (Fig. 4), carried on an arm 25 mounted on the spindle 2 and so to a takeup device 27 which may be driven through reduction gearing 31a from the motor 6. As applied to a multiple-unit machine, (Fig. 2), rails 36 run along either side of the central frame and have a number of supporting bearings 37 for the hollow spindles 2, the pulleys 4 of which are driven by belts 5a and pulleys 38. on a driving shaft 39. After leaving the rolls 26, the doubled yarns proceed to a pair of canted rolls 45. mounted on a lever arm 46, pivoted on a fixed pivot 47. The arm 46 carries a gear 48 meshing with a gear 49 on a driving shaft 50, which drives at least one of the rolls 45. The take-up 52 is driven by a contacting cylinder 53, driven from the shaft 61 through a clutch 60 controlled by a manual stop-and-start lever 54, linked to a lever 55, which is pivoted at 47 and controls the pivotal motion of the levers 46 and 56, the latter carrying a belttensioning pulley 57 and brake block 58, for operating on the belt 5a and pulleys 4 respectively. During operation of the machine, the tension of the spring 62 plus that of the yarn maintains the parts in driving relationship, but yarn breakage on operation of the lever 54 causes clockwise rotation of the levers 46, 56, braking the pulley 4, releasing the tension of the belt 5a, and disengaging the gears 48 and 49. Two yarn packages may be mounted one above the other on the hollow spindle 2, in which case the yarn from the lower package is ballooned about the upper one, and passes through a guide tube having a tension device and located in the top of the hood, after which it is ballooned externally around both packages and passes through a flyer mounted at 180 degrees from the first one, thence through a hole in the spindle 2 and to the rolls 26. A yarn from an external supply is fed in as previously. Similarly, two yarns may be wound sideby-side, without intertwisting, on a common package, one strand therefrom being led down the hollow spindle 2 and the other led out through a guide in the top of the hood and ballooned externally, a third strand being led in from an external source. -
