[Classes 122 (i) and 122 (v)] In a packing device of the kind comprising a, deformable resilient ring 26, Fig. 3, mounted between opposed relatively movable telescoping members 15, 10, Fig. 2, and urged by fluid pressure against an axial abutment such as a flange 22 on the member 10, and wherein the ring 26 having a high pressure face 31 substantially perpendicular to the ring axis and in its free state decreasing in radial width progressively from a maximum a in a plane nearer the high pressure face than the low pressure face 32 to a minimum c at the low pressure face 32, the maximum and minimum radial widths a, c are respectively greater and less than the spacing b between the members 10, 15. The ring 26 may have its maximum radial width at its high pressure face 31 or at a cross-sectional plane x-y, Fig. 10. A fiexible slotted tapered lip 27 of a backing ring 24 may occupy the space between the member 15 and the inner periphery of the ring 26 when the latter is positioned. In a modification the low pressure face may be tapered so that both the inner and outer peripheral surfaces are rounded, and the lip 27 may be dispensed with. The ring 26 may have a layer of more wear resistant material on the friction side. The device may be mounted on the reciprocating member 15.
