Abstract

<PICT:0602434/IV(a)/1> An apparatus for making self-sustaining films is of the type in which an upwardly-moving film-receiving surface picks up a film of liquid as it engages with the lip of a weir over which the body of filmforming liquid flows and is characterised in that the weir is of flexible material whereby it forms a seal with the film-receiving surface and prevents seepage of liquid downwardly. The film-receiving surface comprises a rotating drum, endless band or long web from which the film is subsequently stripped. The film-forming liquid L (Fig. 1) is contained in reservoir 2, the weir-wall 3 of which is of flexible material and bears against the surface A of the casting drum 1. The liquid L is maintained above the top edge of the wall 3 by a constant-level device so that a layer of liquid is drawn upwardly by the drum surface. The liquid layer is converted into a film by evaporation, cooling or oxidation <PICT:0602434/IV(a)/2> <PICT:0602434/IV(a)/3> <PICT:0602434/IV(a)/4> <PICT:0602434/IV(a)/5> <PICT:0602434/IV(a)/6> and the film is stripped from the drum by roll 4. In a modification, an endless belt replaces the drum 1 and the layer of liquid is converted into a film by passing the belt through a solidification chamber. The liquid reservoir may take the form shown in Figs. 4, 6, 7, 8, wherein the weir-wall 3, 3a, 3b and 3d respectively is of flexible material, the ends of the reservoir being closed by relatively movable dams 23 (Fig. 5). The thickness of the film is governed by the viscosity of the film-forming liquid and the speed of the film-receiving surface. Effect materials such as metallic powders, pigments, dyestuffs and short fibres may be scattered on to the surface of the freshly-formed film. Numerous types of flexible material suitable for the construction of the weir are given in the Specification, as also are numerous types of film-forming liquids. The apparatus may also be employed for coating sheet materials with a film-forming substance (see Group VIII).
