Abstract

602,427. Magnetic recording heads. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 24, 1945, No. 28082. Convention date, Nov. 2, 1944. [Class 40 (ii)] In a recording and reproducing head for steel wire, the winding and the core are divided, the winding portions being proportioned and connected, and the core-pieces adjusted, so that the net voltage induced in the winding by stray magnetic fields traversing the core is substantially zero. Fig. 2 shows one form of construction in which the winding is wound in equal amounts 13, 14, but in contrary directions, on semicircular core-elements 7, 8. Under such conditions, speech currents in the coils produce opposite polarities in the confronting polepieces 11, 12, as is required for magnetic recording, while at the same time components of stray magnetic fields traversing the core at right angles to the recording medium 5 induce in the two halves 13, 14 of the winding equal and opposite voltages, the resultant effect of which is zero. Similarly, components of fields parallel to the medium 5 produce equal and opposite voltages in the two half windings 13, 14, provided that the reluctances of the gaps 9 and 10 are equal, adjustable magnetic shunts 15 being provided for this purpose. Other constructions are described with reference to Figs. 3 to 7 inclusive (not shown), while Figs. 8 to 10 inclusive (not shown) illustrate modifications of a design for use with steel tape, where transverse, longitudinal and edgeways modulation is used.
