Abstract

601,581. Smallarms. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., PERRY, C. A., and WACKROW, R. D. Aug. 30, 1944, No. 2088/47. Divided out of 601,517. [Class 119] Sear mechanism for automatic-carbines comprises a sear 13, mounted for pivoted and longitudinal movement on a pivot 17 under control of a spring 19, and adapted to engage a sear bent on the sliding breech block by a shoulder 21 and having a shoulder 23 adapted to be engaged by an arm 25a of a trip pawl 25 pivoted on the trigger 41 in order to disengage the shoulder 21 and fire the carbine. A fire control plate 43 engaging arm 25b of the pawl 25 by its cam-shaped upper part is provided to allow the pawl 25 to be moved into three positions : (1) safety ; (2) one shot or (3) automatic fire. In safety position an abutment 47 on the plate 43 holds a safety lever 49 so that its other end 43a is raised to engage the reverse side of the sear bent and hold the breech block in uncocked position and the trip pawl is unable to engage the sear. In one shot position the plate 43 is turned and lowers the trip pawl 25 so that on pressing the trigger the trip pawl engages the shoulder 23 on the sear, which it raises to release the sear bent and breech block, whereupon the sear 23 is returned to its initial position by the spring 19 and is moved clear of the pawl 25 and re-engages the breech block. In continuous fire position the plate 43 moves the trip pawl still lower so that it remains in engagement with the sear on operation of the trigger and the sear is maintained out of the path of the sear bent. The plate 43 is mounted on a pivot 51 turned by an outside thumb lever. Specification 601,517 is referred to.
