Abstract

601,318. Friction clutches. WULLSCHLEGER, A. June 29, 1945, No. 16583. Convention date, June 16, 1944. [Class 80 (ii)] In a clutch having a resilient split ring on one member expanded into frictional contact with the other member by balls or other motiontransmitting elements housed in radial channels in the first member, at least one of the elements in each channel is out of alignment with the others by an amount which may be adjusted to compensate for wear of the clutch surfaces. As shown, the clutch comprises a member 2 keyed to the driving shaft 1 and in driving relation, through a pin 4, with a gapped resilient ring 6 carrying friction pads 7 coacting with a driven member 19 journalled on the member 2. The outer end of the pin 4 engages between the ends of the ring 6, and its inner end projects into a slot 5 in an operating sleeve 3 to limit the movement of the latter. Sets of three balls 10, 11, 12, the first two housed in radial bores 8 in the member 2 and the third mounted in staggered relation between them, transmit the longitudinal movement of the sleeve 3, acting through an incline 13, to the ring 6. A member 15 axially supporting the ball 12 can be screwed along the member 2 for clutch adjustment and is provided with a dustexcluding seal 18 coacting with the member 19. The member 19 may be the driving member, and the friction pads 7 may be dispensed with, the ring 6 then coacting directly with the member 19. Either or both of the balls 10, 11 may be duplicated or motion-transmitting elements consisting partly of balls and partly of elements of other shapes may be used.
