Abstract

A process for the production of a metal salt of an organic acid comprises heating an organic acid in the fluid state with lead, copper, cadmium, zinc, iron, nickel, silver or tin contained in a vessel having a ratio of length to greatest cross-sectional dimension of at least 10 : 1 while passing an oxygen containing gas through the vessel substantially in the direction of its length. The process may be carried out (a) by passing the oxygen containing gas and organic acid into a converter containing in fragmentary form the metal to be treated, or (b) by passing the gas into the converter charged with the metal particles and acid in fluid form. During both processes a portion of the fluid material may be removed from the converter and with or without removal of water returned thereto at a point remote from where it was removed. In a modification, the reaction is effected in a solvent for the acid and salt. The process is executed at temperatures ranging from 50 DEG to 200 DEG C. and at normal or superatmospheric pressures. The acids specified are: acetic, propionic, butyric, caproic, lauric, palmitic, stearic, rincinoleic, melissic, glycollic, lactic, tartaric, oxalic, glutaric, adipic, acrylic, methacrylic, oleic, benzoic and naphthenic acids, and the acids derived from coconut, corn, cottonseed, rapeseed and similar vegetable oils.
