Abstract

600,583. Flood banks. ROWBOTHAM, F. W. July 17, 1945, No. 18249. [Class 68 (ii)] A flood bank is built up from prefabricated concrete hollow backless units, each comprising a sloping front 11, base 2 and sides 5 formed with shoulders 4, 6 which are oppositely directed on the two sides so that when the units are assembled in aligned and abutting position a substantially water - tight joint is formed. A continuous groove 9 extends along the top 3 in which a board may be positioned to increase the height of the bank, and a continuous keel 8 is provided beneath the base 2 to embed into the ground. The sides slope inwardly somewhat from their central vertical lines to form gaps between adjacent units which may be filled with packing material to increase the water-tightness of the joints. The units may be filled with ballast and they are provided with swivel rings 13, 14 adjacent each bottom corner by which the unit may be lifted by a crane or drawn backward or forward by a tractor.
