[Class 44] A mortice latch comprises a tubular casing 1, Fig. 1, provided internally with opposed guide cheeks 10, 11, between which is mounted a sliding latch bolt consisting of two relatively movable parts, a latch head 8 resiliently urged outwardly with respect to the second part and to the casing, and a second part 25 resiliently urged forwardly with respect to the casing. The connection between the two parts comprises a bifurcated extension 22, provided with inwardly directed projections 24, on one part ; as shown, the latch head and a central stem 30, with outwardly extending shoulders 31 on the other part, so that the projections and shoulders co-operate to withdraw the latch, and the part 25 of the bolt co-operates with a cam on a follower mounted in the casing. A spring 32 housed in a bore in the stem 30 urges the parts apart, and a second spring 36 between the bolt tail and the casing urges the whole bolt outwardly. The tail part 25 is slotted to form a frame within which the follower 44, Fig. 4, is accommodated, and cams 51, 52 on the latter engage in recesses 53, 54 of the tail, so that rotation of the follower in either direction withdraws the latch. A flange 46, Fig. 1, at one end of the follower seats in a hole 20 in the casing, the other end seating in a recess, and a pivoted retaining plate 47 engages over the margin of the flange 46. The parts of the bolt slide between shoulders 15, 16 formed at top and bottom of the cheeks 10, 11. The case and other main parts of the latch are preferably made by die-casting.
