Abstract

599,995. Conduits; couplings. PIERCE FOUNDATION, Inc., J. B. Sept. 27, 1945, No. 25091. Convention date, Dec. 7, 1944. [Classes 36 and 38 (i)] A severable electric conduit section carrying one or more electrical conductors, comprises a subsection with one end " squared " so that it may be severed at any desired point to reduce its length, and a second co-operating sub-section also with one end " squared " and means provided for holding the two sub-sections in alignment with their square ends abutting. The conductors may be correspondingly severed at one end of the section, means being provided to prevent longitudinal displacement of the conductors in the section. The section may be rectangular and made of insulation such as a thermosetting plastic. Sub-section 2, Fig. 4, has a socket formation 12 at one end to engage with the plug end of the next section, with squared ends 2a, 3a of sections 2, 3 abutting at the other end. A sleeve 4, Fig. 2, preferably of metal, fits closely over the sub-sections and is secured by screws passing through holes 2b, 3b. The sub-sections 2, 3 are formed with transverse ridges 7, Fig. 10, having grooves 7a which complement grooves 11a formed in the back plate 11 for carrying conductors, the back plate 11 being secured to the housings by screws fitting in tapered recesses. Sub-section 3 is formed with wells which surround lugs secured to the conductors, to prevent longtitudinal displacement of the conductors during the cutting operation. The conductors are either tubular with one end conical to provide for interengagement, or solid with a socket at one end. Insulation may be provided on the conductors as a precautionary measure. Subsection 3 may be provided with outlet apertures and the conductor lugs also provide contact elements to engage with plugs or other contact devices.
