Abstract
599,044. Automatic catches. BAYLISS, JONES, & BAYLISS, Ltd., and MOORE, G. Sept. 13, 1945,No. 23585. [Class 44] A gravity-controlled latch, which prevents a gate or like hinged member from swinging beyond its closed position, comprises a lever 10 pivoted, between flanges 12 on a pin 13, to the gate 11 so that it is between the gate and the gate-post, that part of the lever which is below the pivot comprising two arms, one, 15, of which has a hooked nose 16 shaped to ride over and embrace an abutment 18 on the post, thus holding the gate closed until the lever is turned, and the other arm 14 lying on the opposite side of the abutment 18. Either this lower arm 14 or a third arm 20 projecting upwardly from the lever 10 can be used on a finger-piece to clear the nose 16 of the abutment 18; the gate is then pushed open and the lever, being heavier below the pin 13 than above it, returns to the position of Fig. 2. The gate cannot swing beyond the closed position for a stop pin 22 on the gate engages the arm 20 and prevents the arm 14 from swinging to the left of Fig. 2.
