An automatic mechanism for opening and closing a gate 1 which is mounted on a gate post 3 so as to be hingeable about a vertical axis and movable up and down, comprises a track member 8, pivotally mounted on a carrier bracket 7 by means of connection 7a, and having a helical track 8b concentric with the vertical inner main stem 6a of the gate. A track follower in the form of a roller 10 is secured to the stem 6a by an axle pin 11, and runs along the track 8b so as to be at one end of track with the gate fully open and at the other end with the gate closed. Actuating means 2, for example a diaphragm actuator 12 acting through the pipe 13, cause the track member 8 to pivot about its horizontal axis thus reversing the angle of inclination of the track 8b and causing the roller 10 to follow the helical path of the track and therefore causing the gate to swing about its hinging axis from the closed to the open position or vice versa. The gate may be provided with a self latching and releasing latch means comprising a self-weighted latch bar 16 pivotally mounted on the free end of the gate, so as to be engageable with a suitably mounted latch strike plate 17 on gate post 18. The leading edge 20 of the plate 17 is tapered up to a notch 19 in the upper part of the plate. The angled lug 21 above the notch 19 prevents the bar 16 from rebounding from the notch.
