[Class 100 (iv)] [Also in Group XXV] In a typewriter or like machine, an access opening in the frame is closed by a hinged door secured by a latch which prevents swinging of the door in either direction. Further, a top bood, hinged at its rear edge and a front panel hinged at its lower edge are provided, the front edge of the hood in its closed position engaging the upper edge of the panel to prevent the latter from swinging about its hinge. As shown the devices are applied to a Royal typewriter, including sidewalls 10, 10<1> and a hood 34 enclosing the mechanism. In each side wall is an opening 38 provided with a hinged door 39 having a flange 40 abutting against a lip 41 on the wall to limit its inward movement. A spring-operated latch 58 (see Group XXV) engages a V-notch in a lug 52 to secure the door in its closed position. A front panel 66 with apertures for the various operating knobs is hinged to a plate 64 fixed to the front cross-bar 16 by screws 65 which also secure the comb guide 15. The panel is secured in its normal position by spring catches 78, 79 released by a press-button 82. Its outward movement is limited by the engagement of the catch part 79 with a stop 87. To prevent rattling of the panel, the hood 34 is provided with a depending skirt 74 and latch members 75 which engage respectively the outer face of the panel and coiled springs 76 mounted on the panel. Stop members 75a on the hood rest on ledges 77 to limit its downward movement. The hinges for the doors and panel are constructed as described in Specification 598,404.
