Abstract

597,910. Uniting by fusion. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and GILLIVER, G. Aug. 2, 1945, No. 19918. [Class 83 (iv)] Fusion welding apparatus for operations in restricted areas comprises a pencil-like tool having an electrode adapted to be propelled forward in the tool to adjust for wear in the manner of a propelling pencil, said tool being operated for welding by the discharge of energy stored in a condenser. The tool comprises a metal casing 15, Fig. 2, having a conical end cap 16 which is tapped to receive a grub-screw 32 to which the electrode 35 of carbon or tungsten or the like is secured. An insulating bush 20 is secured by a screw 21 in the opposite end of the casing and forms a bearing for a journal 22, to which is secured a contact spring 25. The conducting cable 13 has a central wire, insulation, a concentric sheath and outer insulation. Its central core is secured in terminal 22 by a grub-screw 24 and the metal sheath 18 is clamped between two washers 19 ; a cap 17 enclosing the end of the casing. The contacts 27 and 26 on the casing and contact respectively are normally closed and may be opened by an insulated button 28 bearing on the end 29 of the contact. An insulating sleeve 30 is provided in the casing to prevent the spring touching the casing when the button is depressed. The supply is obtained from a transformer with fine and coarse tappings on its secondary which is connected across opposite terminals of a full-wave rectifier. The other pair of terminals are connected one to the work and a condenser and the other to a 10 ohm resistance. The condenser and resistances are connected to a telephone jack which is connected to the two-pin plug on the end of the welding tool cable 13. In operation, the plug and jack are connected and the supply switched on to charge the condenser. The tool is then held in the hand and the insulated button depressed to open contacts 26, 27 and when the circuit is completed by touching the end of the electrode on the work, the condenser discharges to effect a weld. Specification 570,681 is referred to.
