Abstract

597,852. Tubular heat-exchangers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and FORSLING, B. E. G. Oct. 19, 1945, No. 27468. [Classes 64 (i) and 64 (iii)] In heat-exchangers, e.g. an air heater for use with a gas turbine or steam boiler, having tubes 2 which conduct a fluid to be heated by hot gases flowing in contra flow outside and longitudinally of the tubes, the tubes at their outlet ends extend from a single nest and diverge so as to terminate in outlet headers or drums 3, 4 arranged on either side of the path of entering gases, the diverging tubes forming a converging entry 8 for the heating gases. In the air heater for a gas turbine shown in Fig. 1 the length of the section of tubes forming the convergent gas entry is such that the gas velocity is approximately constant throughout the exchanger, the gas passage area between the tubes in the first row being larger than the gas passage area through the tube stack. In one modification there are four headers and in another modification, Fig. 6, the tubes are substantially S-shaped. On a gas turbine plant, the headers 3, 4 may accommodate combustion chambers in which compressed air heated in the tubes 2 takes part in the combustion as described in Specification 597,853, [Group XXVI].
