Abstract

1283297 Steam generator BABCOCK & WILCOX CO 3 April 1970 [3 April 1969] 15968/70 Heading F4A A steam generator used in the turbine plant of a ship's propulsion system has means for controlling the temperature of gases passing over reheat tubes 32 connected between two stages 54, 65 of turbine. A fan 41 supplies combustion air via inlet 42 to furnace enclosure 15 of water tube boiler 10. Hot gases flow successively through a superheater gas pass 16 in which a superheater is connected to supply steam to the turbines, a convection gas pass 17, and reheat gas pass 18, to outlet 19. When no steam is being passed through reheat tubes 32, for example when steam is being passed through astern turbine 56 only, dampers 47 may be opened to allow air from inlet 39 to enter convection pass 17 and cool the gases leaving superheater tubes 27, 28 before they reach the reheat pass. This cooling air may be taken from either downstream, as shown, or upstream, Fig. 2 (not shown), of the regenerative air heater 38. Alternatively (Fig. 3), relatively low temperature gases may be delivered from the gas outlet pass to the convection pass 17.
