Abstract

597,667. Universal joints; securing joint parts on shafts. SOC. GLAENZER SPICER. Aug. 1, 1945, No. 19742. Convention date, Sept. 30, 1938. [Class 80(ii)] One yoke 13, 14 of each of a pair of needle - bearing Hooke's type universal joints is pressed in and welded to a tubular propeller - shaft 11 of a motor - vehicle, whilst the other yokes 18, 19 are, at one side, respectively slidably splined on the gearbox tail-shaft 22 and rigidly splined either directly on a final driven shaft 31, Fig. 2, or on a member 25, Fig. 1, itself rigidly splined on the shaft 31. The yoke 19 is axially located on the splined member 25 by a screwed outer ring 27 co-acting with a snap - ring 26 forming an inner shoulder in the yoke-splines, or, as shown in Fig. 2, the yoke 19 has inclined screws 34 engaging an inclined shoulder 35 on the end of the shaft 31. Alternatively (Fig. 3, not shown), the yoke 19 has radial holes accommodating balls pressed radially into a groove in the shaft-splines by the internally coned end of a ring screwed on the yoke.
