Abstract
597,607. Cable joints. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and LEE, E. C. Aug. 23, 1945, No. 21611. [Class 38 (i)] In a cable termination, the insulation 2 is stripped back from each conductor 1, the lead sheath 3 is stripped back further, and the conductors are inserted into passages in a ceramic bush 4. Metal eyelets are fitted in the passages and are spun over at each end, a resilient washer 6 being provided at the lower end of each eyelet to equalize the strain on the surface of the ceramic. A groove 7 is cut in the periphery of the ceramic bush, while the upper end of each eyelet lies in a recess, and both the interior of the groove and of the recess are coated with metal. The conductors 1 are soldered at 8 to the eyelets through which they pass, and to the surrounding metallized area of the ceramic. A metal sleeve 9 is passed over the ceramic block, its edge is rolled into the groove 7, and soldered to the metallized surface of the groove. The other end of the sleeve 9 is reduced to fit the cable sheath 3 and is sweated to it at 10. Filling compound may be introduced through a threaded hole 11 from a collapsable tube 12, the hole being subsequently plugged and hermetically sealed. In other forms of the invention (not shown) the metal sleeve may be sealed to the cable sheath by a compression joint, or the sleeve may be externally threaded and fitted with fixing nuts. The eyelets may be formed with externally screwthreaded extensions to which terminal posts may be fitted, or terminal tags may be held in position under the eyelet heads and soldered with the latter to the metallized ceramic surface. In another form of the invention, separate ceramic blocks have eyeletted passages through which the individual conductors pass. The eyelets are spun over the upper ends of the blocks, and the conductors are soldered to them and to the adjacent metallized surface of the ceramic. A flange at the lower end of each block is metallized and to it is soldered a brass bush which may be soldered to a metallic sleeve, or threaded and screwed into a metal terminal box. Specifications 569,388, [Group II], and 586,642 are referred to.
