Abstract
A supported platinum metal catalyst is prepared by coating a porous support with a solution containing a metal of the platinum group in an organic solvent having a boiling point of 250 DEG C. or more at atmospheric pressure and heating the coated support to remove the solvent and deposit the platinum metal on the surface of the support. Preferably the organic solvent is subject to decomposition before its boiling point is reached and may be an oil or fat, e.g., Balsam oil, fish oil, pine oil, and lanoline. The porous support may consist of water soluble material, e.g., magnesium sulphate; reference is also made to the use of aluminium oxide and silica gel. The coating solution may be in the form of a suspension or an emulsion, and may contain platinum chloride or chloroplatinic acid. A mixed coating of platinum and palladium may be formed. The catalyst may be used for oxidation and reduction reactions and is especially useful for the oxidation of sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide in the contact process.ALSO:A platinum metal is deposited on a porous support by coating with a solution containing the platinum metal in an organic solvent having a boiling point of 250 DEG C. or more at atmospheric pressure, and heating the coated support. Balsam oil, fish oil, pine oil, and lanoline are used as solvents, and magnesium sulphate, aluminium oxide, and silica gel as supports. The coating solution may be in the form of a suspension or an emulsion, and may contain platinum chloride or chloroplatinic acid. A mixed coating of platinum and palladium may be formed. The product is used as a catalyst, [see Group III].
