Abstract
592,950. Interlocking flexible pipes. SOLAR AIRCRAFT CO. Dec. 14, 1944, No. 25115. Convention date, Dec. 3, 1943. [Class 99 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVII] The exhaust outlet 15 of an engine cylinder is connected to an element such as an exhaust manifold 11 by a flexible pipe 13 which comprises a helical member successive turns of which overlap and interlock in sliding relation with each other, the connection between the flexible pipe and the outlet or element including a sliding joint providing free rotational and longitudinal movement of the flexible pipe relative to the outlet or element. The pipe allows for relative movement between the engine and the manifold or element when they are mounted on different parts of a structure such as an aircraft. As shown, the connection at the engine end is effected by a nipple 12 bolted to the exhaust outlet and sliding freely within a collar 19 attached to the end of the pipe. The pipe has a helically wound packing within the turns which is made by metal strips braided together. Specification 591,635 and U.S.A. Specification 1,476,704 are referred to.
