Abstract

[Also in Division F1] A pipe joint for an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine comprises a tubular joint piece 10 having an intermediate cylindrical portion 11 and opposite end portions 12 and 13 of part-spherical shape and oppositely disposed sleeve members 14 and 15 receiving said end portions, the wall thickness of the joint piece being thin relative to the wall thickness of the sleeve members and the material of the joint piece having a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than the material from which said sleeve members are formed. The sleeve members may be of east iron or mild steel and the joint piece may be of stainless steel. The sleeve pieces may be integral with ends of the pipes to be joined as shown or may be secured to the ends of the said pipes as by welding. The part-spherical ends of the joint piece have a cold fit in the sleeve members ranging from an interference fit to a five thousandths of an inch diametrical clearance fit. In use, the joint piece expands to seal with the sleeve members, ends of the joint piece being deformed during the first use of the joint if the joint piece has an interference fit with the sleeve members. The axial length of the joint piece is less than the distance between shoulders defining the inner ends of the sleeve members thereby allowing axial expansion of the joint piece as well as lateral or angular displacement of the joined pipes. In Fig. 3 (not shown), manifold sections 21, 22 and 23 bolted to a cylinder block 20 are connected together and to an exhaust 24 by tubular joint pieces 10.
