591,536. Seed sowers. HOWARD, T. W., KETHRO, G. E., STOODLEY, H. H., and STYCH, A. Sept. 11, 1945, No. 13266/44. [Class 6 (i)] A seed sower comprises a hopper 13 fixed in a rectangular chamber 10 containing a transversely situated, rotatable, pocketed drum 16. An extension 22 on the sleeve 20 enclosing the drum has a pin-and-slot engagement over the neck of the hopper and is pressed downwardly by a spring 25. Through a hole in plate 7 a conical extension 11 of box 10 forms a seed shoot. The shaft 17 of the drum 16 is driven by chain gearing from the front wheels. Extensions to the sides of box 10 provide recesses to hold drums with larger or a different number of pockets. A coulter opens a furrow, a V-shaped blade closes it and a roller consolidates the soil. Vertical adjustments are provided for these members. Adjustable handles are provided to propel and guide the machine. A brush 21a is provided within the hopper neck to keep the pockets free of surplus seed. A variable drive connected to shaft 17 may adjust the seed-spacing.
