Abstract
590,854. Cylinders; valve gear. BUGATTI, E. April 23, 1945, No. 10176. Convention date, March 29, 1943. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In an engine cylinder having more than one valve for each separate function, i.e., inlet or exhaust, each valve being large enough individually to perform that function, at least two valves are open at the beginning of the period and then all except one are closed leaving that one only open for the rest of the period. The Figure shows a cam for three exhaust valves the roots 39, 40, 41 of the cam bosses being set at angles of 120 degrees. Two similar cams oriented at angles of 120 degrees are fixed to the cam shaft so that each of the three valves in turn is opened for the whole of the exhaust period.
