Abstract
589,400. Furnace charging machines. WELLMAN SMITH OWEN ENGINEERING CORPORATION, Ltd., and KAY, I. March 21, 1945, No. 7167. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXII and XXX] Furnace charging apparatus, manipulators. for use in forging, and other like apparatus comprising a work carrying member or peel mounted to turn about its longitudinal axis on a support is provided with means imposing a resilient resistance to turning movement of the peel under undue stresses set up by operations on the work. The peel 1 may be rotated from an electric motor, hydraulic engine or other power means through gearing 3, a spur wheel 3a loosely mounted on the peel and through a sleeve-like driving element 6 slidably keyed on the peel. On either the element 6 or the hub of the spur wheel 3a axially extending projections 11 are formed at diametrically opposite points. These projections are in the form of truncated wedges having the taper edges extending radially and the other member is formed with corresponding recesses 12. Any severe angular wrench on the peel will result in a separation of the parts 3a and 6 under the action of a spring 8 with corresponding rotational movement of the peel.
