Abstract

588,432. Fluid-pressure servomotors. LUCAS, Ltd., J., WATSON, E. A., and IFIELD, R. J. Dec. 16, 1942, No. 17894. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXVII] The supply of liquid fuel to a, prime mover is controlled by the blower-air pressure and the rate of flow of fuel measured by the relative movement of two members forming a variable orifice through which the fuel flows. The invention may be applied to the control of a variable delivery fuel pump, comprising a series of spring-loaded plungers c housed in a rotary member a and actuated by a swashplate e adjusted by a spring-loaded piston q. The piston is subject on one side to pump outlet pressure supplied through a conduit l and on the other side to a variable pressure regulated by a restriction t and a hinged leak-off valve w, loaded by a spring x. This valve is actuated by a diaphragm 2, adjustably located by a spring and subject to the delivery pressure of a centrifugal pump formed by an axial passage m and radial passages o in the member a. A second leak-off valve 16 is carried by a spindle 12, secured to a diaphragm 15, subject to blower-air pressure and loaded by a spring 13. The spring supports a plug 11 arranged in an orifice plate 9, between the main pump outlet j and the fuel delivery connection k, arranged so that the compression of the spring varies with the rate of fuel flow. In a modification, the valve 16 is replaced by a hinged valve, loaded by a spring adjusted by the movement of a tubular member about a tapered plug in the fuel conduit and actuated by an evacuated bellows and a bellows subject to blower-air pressure. The outside of the bellows may be subject to full pressure. According to the Provisional Specification, the spindle actuates the relief valve of a pump or a by-pass, or other regulating device in the fuel-supply system. Specification 577,016 is referred to.
