Abstract
588,306. Speed governors. HOULDING, H. Dec. 5, 1944, No. 24275. [Class 57] [Also in Group XXIX] A speed controlling device for an internalcombustion engine comprises a coiled spring 14 mounted in the intake system, any increased flow of fuel mixture beyond that required for a predetermined speed causing the coils to close to an adjustable extent and restrict the flow to the engine. The conical spring 14 rests on a spider frame 2 having a tubular spindle 10 on which slides a collar 4 fixed to the other end of the spring. The collar 3 fitted with a crosspin 15, sliding in slots 16 in the stem 10, forms a lower stop adjustable by the screw 19 whose conical end 18 engages the inclined face 17 of the slidable block 9 on which the cross-piece 15 rests, the upper stop being formed by' the screwed collar 8. A light auxiliary spring 22, adjustable by a screw 7 moving in an eyeblock 6, is provided to vary the sensitivity to closure of the main spring 14. After setting to operate at the required speed, the adjusting screws 7 and 19 may be locked in position by sealing wire or enclosing caps. The device may be separate and situated between the carburetter and intake manifold, or it may be integral with the carburetter. The Provisional Specification describes an adjustable byepass to permit the flow of a sufficient quantity of mixture to maintain engine speed and an embodiment having a conical shell beneath the spring with a bore in the neck giving a' correct restriction of the combustible mixture.
