[Class 120 (iii)] In a machine for cutting continuous filaments to staple length, and comprising a shear member providing a cutting base and a knife which is moved relatively thereto to sever the fibres, a limited oscillating movement' is imparted to either the shear member or the knife in a direction having a component transverse to that in which cutting takes place, and out of phase with the cutting movement. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the cutting base is provided by the disc 5 which is rotated about a spindle 3. The filaments pass through the funnel 6 and passage 7 to the periphery, where they are severed by a knife 9. The latter is mounted upon a rod 11, connected to a piston 13 working in a cylinder 10. Oscillation in a vertical direction is caused by admitting a fluid to one or other side of the piston 13 through pipes 16, 17. In a modification, reciprocating movement is obtained from the spindle 3 through bevel gearing of non- integral ratio,.a disc carrying an eccentric pin, and a connecting rod, the knife moving on a vertical slide. In a modified machine, Fig. 3, the filaments pass through the opening 29 in a non- rotating shear member 30, and are severed by the rotating knives 31 co-operating with the under surface thereof. The knives are carried on bell-crank levers 32 and are urged upwardly by springs 35a; cam-follower rollers 37 following a cam track 36 cause them to clear the surface of the shear member 30 except in the neighbourhood of the aperture 29. The knife assembly is mounted on a member 33 and rotated by a spindle 34. The shear member 30 is slidably mounted in a member 38 and given a horizontal reciprocating movement by means of a connecting rod 44 and strap 43 which fits loosely over an eccentric 42 carried on a spindle 40 and rotated by a pulley 41.
