Abstract
585,082. Cockpit hoods. REID & SIGRIST, Ltd., and BOWER, C. Feb. 12, 1945, No. 3487. [Class 4] A cockpit hood comprises a plurality of runners 26 pivotally connected by hinges 46 to the lower side edges, and engaging with parallel guide rails 30, the hinge pins on one side of the cockpit being releasable to enable the hood to be swung to one side in an, emergency without jettisoning the hood. The releasable hinge pins 46, Fig. 3, are normally retained in position against the force of compression springs 51 on a tension member 48 parallel to the pins, by a hand lever 52 engaging a collar 58 on one of the pins. The edges of the hood are reinforced by strips of transparent material 22, 24, cemented and riveted to the main portion of the hood member 10, while a strip of rubber or other flexible material 62 is interposed between the lower edges of the hood and the guide rails 30. Releasable hinges may be fitted to both sides of the cockpit to enable the hood to be jettisoned, or the hinges on one side may be in the form of hooks to become detached from the fuselage when the hood has swung through more than a right angle.
