Abstract

Artificial staple fibres are prepared by extruding a fibre-forming material into a setting medium, and moving a stream of fluid transversely across the filaments whilst they are still plastic to effect a reduction in strength at spaced points along the length of the filaments. The filaments are thereafter subjected to tensile stress to break the same at the weakened points. The weakened points may be spaced regularly or irregularly along the filaments. In Fig. 1, the stream of fluid is ejected from nozzles 14 rotating about the filaments leaving the spinneret 1 so as to produce regularly spaced weakened positions as shown at 15 and 16. The nozzles 14 are mounted on a ring member <PICT:0584964/IV/1> 5 which is rotated by the pinion 10. To provide irregularly spaced weakened portions, a pair of elliptical gears may be used to drive the ring member 5. The invention may be applied to the wet, dry, or melt spinning process, and the fibres may consist of regenerated cellulose, cellulose derivatives, polyvinyl resins, nylon or proteinaceous material such as casein.
