Abstract
A continuous process for the production of methyl ethyl ketone comprises heating 2 : 3-butylene glycol under atmospheric pressure in the presence of up to 10 per cent, preferably 5 to 10 per cent by weight of the glycol, of a relatively non-volatile strong acid in the substantial absence of inert diluent or solvent and adding fresh quantities of said glycol at a rate approximately equal to its rate of conversion whilst continuously distilling off the methylethylketone and water as they are formed. The acids are defined as being those acids relatively non-volatile in relation to said glycol which will substantially completely dissociate in concentrated aqueous solutions as opposed to weak acids which will substantially completely dissociate only at a high degree of dilution. Acids which may be used include sulphuric, phosphoric, trichloracetic and p-toluene sulphonic acids. The process may be carried out in a heated reaction kettle fitted with a reflux column to prevent entrainment of glycol by the effluent vapours. In addition to methyl ethyl ketone, small quantities of 3 : 4-dimethyl - D 3 - hexane - 2 - one are formed. An example is given in which 96 per cent by weight sulphuric acid is employed as dehydrating agent, and a reflux temperature of 73-80 DEG C. is maintained.
