Abstract
584,695. Welding. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and SALTHOUSE, J. E. Sept. 18, 1944, No. 17789. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXV] The sliding stud holder of a portable machine for welding studs to plates, is held in any desired position in its range of motion by establishing an electromagnetic holding force by energizing a coil which sets up a magnetic flux through the stud holder and the member on which it slides when the two members are in the' desired relative position. A plunger 3, tapped at 3a to take a chuck for gripping the stud, slides in the body 1. When the machine is held against a plate with a fusible insert between the latter and the stud the plunger moves inwardly against spring 4 until the ends of legs 6 bear against the plate. The coil is then energized holding the plunger in position due to the attraction between teeth on the body 1 and on polepieces 3b, 3c and welding current is passed through the stud to the plate, the fusible part rupturing and forming an arc. After a predetermined time, the coil 5 is deenergized and the spring 4 presses the stud into contact with the plate. The relative movement of the two members may be angular, or the surfaces in contact may be plane, or the coil may be on the fixed member and may be de-energized in stages.
