Abstract

<PICT:0583967/IV/1> Fibre pulp, produced by the chemical digestion of wood or other fibrous material, for use, for example, in the manufacture of paper, is treated for the removal of chemicals in an apparatus comprising a constrictive permeable passage for confining the pulp as it leaves the digester, means for expressing chemical-laden liquid by pressure, means for thickening the stock into a magma, and means for introducing liquid extractant for chemical as the pulp passes from the feed-in portion of the passage into a succeeding portion in which liquid is expelled from the cake by displacement by the extractant. Pulp from a digester 11, Fig. 1, is fed to a perforated tubular housing 26, surrounded by a casing 17 and is conveyed by a pressing screw 16 in a screw channel of progressively reduced cross-sectional area on the feed in portion thereof. Liquid expressed from the pulp passes through the housing 26 to a pipe 43, whence it may be passed through a valve 45 either to a recovery plant through a tube 47 or to be led away as desired through a pipe 48, or to be returned to dilute the pulp leaving the digester 11. The magma formed in the feed in section of the screw channel passes into a succeeding section at the opposite side of a partition 31 in the casing 17. At the junction of the two sections the depth of the screw-thread increases abruptly and extracting liquid is introduced through holes X from an internal bore 38 in the screw 16 to displace partially the liquid in the pulp. The latter liquid passes through the housing 26 to be collected through the pipe 44 for disposal in the alternative means used for the liquid from the pipe 43. The treated pulp leaves the apparatus through a hood 18 containing a rotating paddle 24. In a modified construction, the rotary screw 16 may comprise a number of sections in addition to the feed-in section, the depth of the screw-thread being increased abruptly at the junctions of the sections where the extracting liquid is introduced. A number of constructions of either form of apparatus may be assembled to treat the pulp in a succession of chemical removing operations, means being provided for diluting the pulp as it leaves one construction to enter the next.
