583,294. Ordnance mountings. RUAU, F. F., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. Oct. 16, 1944, No. 20002. [Class 92 (i)] A device for assisting the recoil spring or equivalent device of a gun during the runout comprises an auxiliary spring 13 which is loaded as the gun recoils and which is held loaded during a part of the runout by a cocking device, such as a plate 4, and is subsequently released, to provide the additional force for effecting the run out. In the construction shown, the spring 13 surrounds a rod 12, the lower end of which slides in a bush 18 supported by pins 14 which are journalled in half-bearings 15 carried by plates 7, the latter being fixed to the gun cradle 6. The upper end of rod 12 has a boss which receives a pin 11 of a lever 9 pivoted to the plates 7. Lever 9 carries a roller 10 so positioned as to be engaged by the vertical end face 5 of a plate 4 fitted to the gun barrel 2. In operation, the end face 5 engages roller 10 when the barrel recoils and thereby turns lever 9 about its pivot 8 to compress spring 13, and the spring is held in this loaded position by the plate during the remainder of the recoil movement and also during the runout until the face 5 is clear of the roller 10. Thereafter the energy stored in spring 13 is available to assist in the running out of the barrel.
