Abstract

582,526. Electron oscillators. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. Jan. 18, 1944, No. 987. Convention date, Jan. 22, 1943. [Class 39 (i)] Ultra-high-frequency oscillation apparatus comprises a velocity modulation oscillation generator having an electron beam and means for periodically varying the velocity of said beam at the operating frequency thereof, and including means for varying said electron beam at a reference frequency substantially subharmonically related to the operating frequency of said generator. In an application to a high frequency generator of the type shown in Specification 523,712 with buncher and catcher resinators 16 and 21, the electron beam from a cathode 12 is impressed with a frequency sub-harmonically related to that of the resonators by the first grid 13 of the buncher resonator. The cathode is connected through a capacity 38 and an earthed tuned circuit 37 to an oscillator 34 giving the desired low frequency and the grid 13 is earthed. The electron beam then passes through the high-frequency resonators. This preliminary grid control of the electron beam may be applied to high-frequency apparatus of the types disclosed in Specifications 528,041, 534,144, 535,767, 545,146 and 548,725. A separate grid may be used for this control instead of the first grid of the high-frequency apparatus. Specification 531,067 also is referred to.
