Abstract

Blanks for soles or heels are cut from a sheet of paper, textile or felted base material which has been impregnated to a greater or less degree with an artificial resin, with or without a plasticizer and colouring agent, and are afterwards moulded to shape. The blanks may, alternatively, be impregnated after cutting them from a sheet of untreated base material. A medicated solution may, if desired, be added to the impregnant. A heel, or upper, may be moulded with a sole in one operation by assembling impregnated parts in a mould and applying heat or pressure. The shoe parts may be impregnated on the outer face and edges only so as to leave, for example, the inner surfaces of the upper, softer; or a separate layer of felt &c. may be used for the inner surface of the upper to serve as a lining. The upper may be of leather, or of fabric or other material with an ornamental pattern and coated with a transparent or translucent plastic material. Non-skid ornamental patterns may be formed on the sole or upper during the moulding process. The artificial resin may be of the thermoplastic or thermo-setting types and may be in solution, dispersion or other liquid form, or it may be inserted in granular or sheet form in the moulds in which the shoe parts or complete shoe is moulded so that impregnation and moulding may proceed simultaneously. Different kinds of resins may be employed as impregnant in different parts of the footwear. In the case of a Wellington boot, to facilitate manufacture the upper leg portion may be united to the moulded lower leg portion in a separate operation.
