Abstract
582,160. Umbrellas. HERBIN, M. L. C. G. July 14, 1939, Nos. 20528 and 20529. Convention dates, July 20, 1938 and July 11, 1939. [Class 134] The head member 1, Figs. 1, 2 to which the ribs are pivoted and the runner 2, Fig. 3, to which the stretchers are pivoted, are of rectangular form, and the ribs and stretchers are arranged in groups at the narrow ends so that when folded with the head and runner together and the stretchers enclosing the ribs, the framework has a compact rectangular shape. For this purpose the pivotal points of the laterally disposed ribs and stretchers 31, 311, 4<1>, 4<11>, 5<1>, 5<11> and 61, 6<11> are offset as shown at 21. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 12, the width of the head and runner members may be reduced by staggering the lateral slots 111, 11<11>, 121, 12<11> for the inner ends of the ribs and stretchers, and in a further arrangement the head and runner members may be divided longitudinally into two separable parts. When the ribs have pivoted extensions, these are connected together and to the inner parts of the ribs by double-jointed links in which the pivot pins are set so that when folded upon one another, the rib extensions lie in planes parallel with the plane perpendicular to the header and runner members and dividing it longitudinally. The joints are made rigid in their expanded position by sliding sleeves which cover them and are held in position by spring latches. The stick may be made in separable sections 8, 8<1> connected together and to the head by screwed joints, "conical hinges" or square hinges and a spring pawl, and the handle end of the stick may be made as a hollow box in -which are packed the folded frame and the detached parts of the stick. In another form the stick and handle may be in sections connected together by hinge plates so that they may be folded flat, the joints being stiffened in use by.sliding sleeves locked in position by spring latches. The cover of the umbrella is taken off before folding and is secured in position by a central ring fixed to the head member and rings which are hung on the ends of the ribs or by tubular caps fitting over the ends of the ribs.' Alternatively the cover may be permanently attached to the frame, the sliding sleeves being replaced by a device in which the engagement and blocking of the rib portions in the open position are controlled by the tension of the cover.
