This invention relates to umbrellas, and more particularly to an improved folding umbrella adapted to be collapsed into a small space when not in use.

One object of the present invention is to provide a folding umbrella of the above nature so constructed that when collapsed it will be small enough to be carried in a pocket, a traveling bag, or in a ladys hand-bag.

A further object of this invention is to provide a folding umbrella of the above nature which willbe simple inconstruction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, ornamental in appearance, and very 16 efficient and durable in use.

With these and other objects in view there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing one form in which the invention maybe conveniently embodied in practice.

Fig. 1 represents a view of the umbrella as it appears in open position, the cover of the umbrella being shown in dotted lines.

Fig. 2 is a View of the umbrella in partially collapsed position, with the cover removed.

Fig. 3 is a view of the umbrella as it appears in completely collapsed position.

Referring now to the drawings in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 indicates the lower or handle section of the staff, said section 10 having an enlarged handle 11 from which depends the usual pivoted ring 12. The handle portion 10 of the staff is slidable within an upper sleeve 13 which is closed at its top by a cap 14. The lower end of the sleeve 13 is provided with a flange 15 within which are a plurality of sockets 16 for detachably and frictionally engaging an equal number of knobs '17 protruding from the handle section 10 adjacent the handle 11.

The sleeve 13 is provided adjacent the top thereof with the usual fiat vertical spring catch 18 having an inclined edge adapted to be forced inwardly by the raising of a tubular member 19 surrounding said sleeve 13 and having a pair of collars 20 and 21 mounted on its upper and lower ends respectively.

Each rib 22a is connected 5 located closer together than the inner ends thereof. The upper stretching links, 23 are provided intermediate their ends with slots 25 for receiving pins 26 mounted on the lower ends of a plurality of connecting links 27 pivoted at their upper ends to the cap 14.

Operation In operation, when the umbrella isin open position, as shown in Fig. 1, the connecting links 27, the ribs22a and the upper outer por-. tion of the stretchinglinks 23 will be held in curved alinement for supporting the cover 22 in its open stretched position.

When it is desired to close the umbrella it will merely be necessary to manually press the catch 18 inwardly and. pull the tubular member 19 downwardly, thereby causing the links 23, 24, and27 to move about their pivots, drawing the ribs 22a inwardly first to the po-. sition shown in Fig. 2, and then into the completely collapsed position shown in Fig. 3.

While there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which theinvention may be embodied, it is to-be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosure but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing'from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifica- .tions and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as-new, and for which it desired to secure Letters Patent, is:

1. In a folding umbrella, a handle rod, a

sleeve adapted to telescope on said rod, a

tubular member slidable upon said sleeve, a-

pair of stretching links pivoted to the upper lower ends of said tubular member, and

adapted to be pivoted tothe outer ends of said stretching links, a connecting link pivoted to the top of said sleeveand slidably connected to the upper of said stretching links, and releasable means on said sleeve for holding said tubular member in its uppermost position with the umbrella in open position.

3.In a folding umbrella, a handle rod, a sleeve telescoping upon said rod, a tubular member slidable upon said sleeve, a pair of stretching links pivoted to the upper and lower ends of said tubular'inember, a rib pivoted to the outer ends of said stretching links, a 1

connecting link-pivoted to the top of said sleeve andslidably connected to one of said stretching links, releasable means, on said sleeve for holding said tubular member in its uppermost position with the umbrella in open position, and means for detachably and frictionally lockingsaid handle rod in collapsed position Within said sleeve.

In a folding umbrella, a handle rod, a sleeve telescoping upon said rod, a tubular member slidable upon said sleeve, a pair of stretching links pivoted to the upper and lower ends of said tubular member, a rib pivoted to the outer ends of said stretching links, a connecting link pivoted to the top of said sleeve and slidably connected to one of said stretching links, and releasable means on said sleeve for holding said tubular memberin its uppermost position With the umbrella in open position, the outer ends of said stretching links being located closer together than the inner ends thereof. 5.
