Abstract
581,993. Pressure relieving devices. POWER, R. F. Nov. 6, 1943, No. 18460. [Class 135] To prevent a pipe or tubular container from bursting when the liquid therein freezes, the pipe is provided with a compressible resilient element continuous between joints in the pipe and projecting into the interior from the internal wall so that an increased cross-sectional area can be occupied by the liquid at freezing and the formation of a layer of ice as a complete sleeve will be prevented. In one embodiment, the pipe 1, Fig. 2, is provided with a longitudinal, diametrical partition 2 of aerated or inert gas-filled rubber, the partition being a tight fit in the pipe or being adhesively secured therein. The gas filling may be at atmospheric or higher pressure. Separate lengths of the partition are held together by abutting channelshaped members 5, Fig. 3, fitted on the ends of the strips, the members 5 having teeth to grip the rubber and being formed with encircling positioning washers 3 which can be gripped between two lengths of pipe. Alternatively, two partitioning strips can be connected by plates placed on each side of the strips and eyeletted 'or rivetted together. Further embodiments comprise strips 2a, Fig. 7, of triangular section covered by bias fabric stitched at 12, strips 2b, Fig. 9, set in grooves in the pipe or adhesively secured thereto and provided with longitudinal holes 14 in the ends of which are inserted sealing plugs serving also to align and connect contiguous strips together, or strips 2, Fig. 10, can be adhesively secured to the inside of the pipe. According to the Provisional Specification, a partition element of rectangular cross-section has its edges formed as sealed air tubes running the length of the partition.
