Abstract

Preformed polythene films are subjected on one or both sides to a superficial treatment with chlorine. Films of good heat-sealing properties are obtained by chlorination in the dark or in the presence of a liquid medium preferably such that the film contains 25-100 mgms. of chlorine per 100 sq. cms. surface area. Chlorine saturated with carbon tetrachloride vapour may be used. Chlorination may be carried out in a liquid medium such as water by passing chlorine therethrough. Other liquid media such as trichloracetic acid or carbon tetrachloride at low temperatures may be used. Films of high surface hardness may be produced by chlorination in an illuminated zone in the absence of liquid media. Films produced as above have increased dye affinities and may be printed. In an example, a polythene film is chlorinated for 5 minutes in a slow stream of chlorine while subjected to actinic light radiations. The resulting product may be heat sealed at temperatures below 100 DEG C. In the second example, a polythene film is passed slowly through a chamber filled with chlorine so that it is chlorinated for a period of 15 minutes at 30 DEG C. The product can be sealed at temperatures of 70-90 DEG C. Specifications 474,426 and 481,515 are referred to.
