Abstract
580,904. Making shackles. ARON, H., and OMES, Ltd. Sept. 29, 1944, No. 18713. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Angular bending; dies.-A method of making a shackle comprises electrically up-setting heads on each end of a straight blank, pressing them to the shape of the desired eyes, electrically heating the centre portion only of the blank and bending the heated blank to U-shape by pressing it into a U- shaped die. Each end of a bar is electrically upset and pressed to form eyes 11, 12 and the centre portion 20 is then electrically heated by means of vice electrodes 15, 16 and 17, 18 connected to the secondary winding 19 of a step-down transformer. The blank is then placed horizontally between guides 30, 31 on a die block 21 and is pressed to U-shape by means of a plunger 34. The die block has a central opening 22 lined with plates 24, 25 having vertical slots 28 to receive the shank 20 of the shackle and also to support the lower sides of the enlarged eye portions so that they are correctly positioned relatively to one another in the completed shackle. An adjustable end stop 32 facilitates the correct positioning of the blank over the recess. The machining of the eye openings may be carried out either before or after the final bending operation.
